Singer Spotlight: Rebecca Newton

February 2020

What is your occupation?

I am currently a paralegal at Diakon-SWAN/Family Design Resources. I have held that position for the past 6 years; prior to that, I worked as a paralegal with a local law firm.

How many years have you been singing with the chorale?

I began singing with the Chorale in 1995, after moving back to the Lewisburg area after graduating from college. I greatly missed performing music, and when I heard the advertisement for SVC, I jumped at the opportunity to audition and join the group! It is a privilege to perform with such a talented group of singers, under the skillful direction of Dr. Payn.

What was your favorite concert or season…why?

After 25 years, it is really difficult to say what my favorite season has been! I enjoy the diversity of musical styles and genres that we perform. It makes things vocally challenging and interesting! I would have to say that there is not a performance that hasn’t moved me in some way.

Are you involved with any other musical activities?

The Chorale is my active musical endeavor at this time, however, I have sung in my church choir and with the worship team throughout the past few years. Throughout high school and college I participated in choirs and various vocal ensembles, in addition to taking voice lessons. I currently encourage and support my children in their musical studies and performances.

Do you have any other family members part of SVC or SVYC?

None of my family members are currently involved with the SVC or SVYC, however, my daughter was a member of the SVYC as a younger child.

Tell us something else interesting about yourself.

I love to travel and spend time outdoors, especially by hiking. I also enjoy taking in concerts and theatre whenever possible.
