Singer Spotlight: Brad Miller

August 2020

What is your occupation?

I’m a family physician with a clinical interest in addiction medicine.  I’m also on faculty with a residency training program.

Geez, we have a lot of doctors in the house!  I think you make number 3 among our current members.  Maintaining good health is imperative for staying musically active, especially with singers.  Now if everyone would just listen to the experts, we could get rid of these masks and get back to doing what we love.

Tell us, how many years have you been singing with the SVC?

I’ve been on and off since 2000; solidly since 2007.

Fantastic!  Hopefully we can keep you for another 20 years.

What was your favorite concert or chorale season to date, and why?

That is a hard one.  Top 5-ish concerts/pieces…not necessarily in ranking order:  Elijah, Mozart’s Requiem, St. Nicholas, Durufle Requiem, Karl Jenkins’ The Peacemakers, and the Opera Choruses concert (although ultimately I had to sit it out because of illness but I was able to attend the concert).

That’s quite a mix…from fiery to festive to fluid.  It just goes to show how prolific and extensive the repertoire has been for the chorale; performing the favorites of many, and exposing new works to others that might become new favorites.

Do you have any other musical involvements?

In my spare time I enjoy playing the piano.

Me too!  It always helps to be able to pound out your own vocal part at home when learning new pieces.  It’s a skill-set that will last a life-time.

Do you have any other family members involved with SVC or SVYC?

No, I do not.

Hmm…we need to change that.  I’m sure anyone that has come to hear you perform must wonder what it’s like to be on the other side of the conductor.  And as you know, we work hard, but we also have A LOT of fun.
Thanks for sharing, Brad.  Also, I think you’re being paged…
