Singer Spotlight: Heather Britton

March 2026

What was your first exposure to SVC…what/who inspired you to audition?

I had no exposure to the SVC before I auditioned. I am from the Susquehanna Valley and moved back in 2009 after 18 years in Southeast PA and San Francisco. While living in SF, I joined a choir and knew I wanted to keep singing once I returned to PA. I found the SVC online and asked some friends who knew Dr. Payn what it was like to work with him. They said he was wonderful, so I auditioned—and they were right! It’s been an amazing experience. One especially meaningful moment came during my first year, when the SVC celebrated its 40th anniversary. I learned that my step‑grandfather, Bob Mease, was an original member. He passed away when I was 13, so I did not remember this. Discovering that connection was proud and heartwarming; he was very dear to me, and music was something we shared.

What do you enjoy most about being a member?

The camaraderie—especially among the Alto IIs, who are such a fun group—is a huge part of why I love SVC. I also enjoy the challenge of learning new repertoire and the stress relief that singing provides. Our concerts are especially uplifting. I will never forget my first dress rehearsal. When I heard the choir, orchestra, and soloists together for the first time, I was so overwhelmed by the beauty and professionalism that I cried. I had no idea how impressive this ensemble was when I auditioned.

How do you like to spend your free time outside of SVC?

reading, and cooking.

Why do you think it is important to support the arts in our communities?

The Susquehanna Valley is full of talented people and organizations working hard to elevate the arts, but audiences declined during the pandemic and have been slow to return. I worry that we became too comfortable in our isolation, glued to our screens. Supporting the arts helps us reconnect through creative works that inspire and reflect our shared human experience. A thriving arts community also benefits the region as a whole—it draws people in, supports local businesses, and signals that we are a healthy, vibrant place to live. I am deeply grateful to our SVC supporters, whose generosity ensures we can continue bringing people together to experience the joy of music. Thank you!

What excites you most about the next era of SVC under a new conductor/music director?

First, I want to honor Bill’s last season and thank him for the many gifts he’s given our musicians and audiences. I’m grateful to have shared 17 of the last 30 years with him. Looking ahead, I’m excited about Caleb Hopkins’s artistic vision for the chorale. He’s already shown us he’s a masterful conductor who will continue the positive rehearsal atmosphere and challenge us to refine our technique and blend. He has a wonderful program planned for 2026-27, so I hope you’ll stand with the SVC as we grow into the next chapter of musical excellence.
